In the Old Testament, Noah was the last of the pre-flood Patriarchs. He and his family were the ones chosen by God to be spared from the cleansing flood which was meant to wash away all the sinners. Noah is remembered as the builder of the Ark which saved humankind and all the other living species.
In England, the name came into common use after the Protestant Reformation and was popular among the Puritans.
